Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students will explore advanced geometric shapes, including the Pentagon, Hexagon, Parallelogram, and Rhombus. They will discover the properties of each shape and learn how to draw them accurately using Ziggy the Turtle
What You Will Learn
•
Learn about advanced shapes
•
Discover the properties of each shape
•
Draw shapes using Ziggy
•
Use angles and repeat blocks to draw accurately
1. Pentagon
A pentagon is a polygon with five straight sides and five angles. The word comes from Greek:
•
Penta = five
•
Gon = angles
Pentagon Around Us
Properties of a Regular Pentagon
•
All 5 sides are equal
•
All 5 angles are equal
•
Each interior angle = 108°
•
Each exterior angle = 72°
•
Sum of interior angles = 540°
Activity 1: Drawing a Regular Pentagon with Ziggy
Side Length = 5 cm
Exterior Angle = 72°
Using the knowledge from the previous lessons, we can draw the pentagon using Pen down, Pen up, Move, Turn, and Repeat blocks. Don't forget to adjust the reverse and Calibration blocks according to your robot's calibration (Review the Getting Started content for more).
2. Hexagon
A hexagon is a closed 2D shape with six sides, six vertices, and six angles
Hexagon Around Us
Properties of a Regular Hexagon
•
6 equal sides (regular hexagon)
•
6 equal angles
•
Sum of interior angles = 720°
•
Each interior angle = 120°
•
Each exterior angle = 60°
Activity 2: Drawing a Regular Hexagon with Ziggy
Side length = 5 cm
Exterior Angle = 60°
3. Parallelogram
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with:
•
Two pairs of parallel sides
•
Opposite sides are equal in length
Parallelogram Around Us
Properties of a Parallelogram
•
Sum of angles = 360°
•
Adjacent angles add to 180°
•
Opposite angles are equal
•
Opposite sides are equal and parallel
Activity 3: Drawing a Parallelogram with Ziggy
Given:
•
Long Side = 8 cm
•
Short Side = 5 cm
•
Angle 1 = 70°
•
Adjacent angle = 110°
Steps (summary):
1.
Pen Down
2.
Move 80
3.
Turn 110°
4.
Move 50
5.
Turn 70°
6.
Repeat Twice
7.
Pen Up
4. Rhombus
A rhombus is a special type of parallelogram where all four sides are equal
Difference Between Square and Rhombus
•
Square: all angles = 90°
•
Rhombus: angles are not necessarily right angles
Properties of a Rhombus
•
4 equal sides
•
Opposite angles are equal
•
Adjacent angles sum to 180°
•
Sum of all angles = 360°
Rhombus Examples in Real-life
Activity 4: Drawing a Rhombus with Ziggy
Given:
•

•
Adjacent angle = 120°
Steps:
1.
Pen Down
2.
Turn right 30°
3.
